Yppah - Tiny Pause | Pre-order | Album
Having
amassed a legion of loyal fans with his signature blend of electronic,
psychedelic and rock influences, the artist known as Yppah (pronounced
“yip-ah”) is back with perhaps his most intimate work to date. Tiny
Pause, due for release on Counter Records October 16, finds Yppah
adopting an enormous technical shift in his writing process, moving away
from largely software-based production and live instrumentation to
modular synthesizers and samplers. Inspired in large part by 8mm footage
and self-described “creepy/beautiful” archived film found on the
internet, Yppah draws on the same palette of the living landscape, human
memory and emotive warmth found in his prior work and magnifies it,
echoing the sounds of Tycho, Baths and Boards of Canada.
Yppah (born Joe Corrales Jr.) has forged a career marked by ethereality and dynamism. Brought up on equal parts My Bloody Valentine and hip-hop, he has utilized a number of instruments and techniques in forging his place in the uplifting (yet firmly grounded) world his music inhabits. Previous records (2006’s You Are Beautiful At All Times, 2009’s They Know What Ghost Know, 2012’s Eighty One) have harnessed his cultural heritage and relentless curiosity to brilliant effect, landing placements in films (21), video games (Alone In The Dark) and television series (House, CSI) as well as taking him on tour around the globe.
Tiny Pause is informed in large part by shifts in Yppah’s life since his last work. Having toured the album, moved from Texas to Southern California and transitioned into more ambitious commercial work (for trailers, sound design and music libraries), Yppah soon found himself embracing hardware in a big way, buying and selling gear constantly while writing to find the best-suited combination for his workflow. The addition of two dogs to his home and a newfound hobby of surfing round out Yppah’s biggest influencers for the direction of the new record. And it all shows - the celestial dips and rises in “Occasional Magic,” the cascade of drums in “Little Dreamer,” the fractured ascent of “Spider Hands,” and the human-tinged glitches of “Neighborhoods” all point to an artist matured not only in sound but in perspective.

Egadz - Satellites (Deluxe Version) | Album
Multi-instrumentalist Erik Nava is an electronic musician raised in Southern California. Beat making came quickly for him after various forms of hip hop expression. In 2001, Erik fully realized the ideas that broke away from traditional loop and sample based beat music. The idea 12 years ago was to take things a bit further: to make beats into real composed music by utilizing live instruments played by himself. In essence, making beat music that was more than something to layer vocals over. Erik made beats music that stood on its own.
A big believer in crafting an original sound, Erik built song after song, album after album, based on the belief that one day it could be a genre. Unfortunately, the industry hadn’t carved out a niche for this new kind of music in Erik’s early years, so he continued to release the music independently, while slowly roping in fans worldwide. Experimenting and pushing the envelope on what post-hip hop electronica would sound like became an obsession. Soon Erik found himself supporting his own endeavors as a professional musician, still completely independent.
As the beat culture progressed, and technology advanced, the multi-instrumentalist beat maker is no longer a rare sight. Erik didn’t stop there. Making advancements in controller theory and electronic music performance, he has toured all over the US and internationally. He brought his highly original and, at the time, rare controller performance to people who never imagined that music could be played on anything other than live instruments.
Many of the ideas and experiments during the last 12 years have accumulated into Satellites, the newest project released under Erik’s moniker Egadz. Satellites isn’t just an album, but a string of related pieces of multi-media art, including visual art, videos, and video games. Remaining in the vein of innovation, Erik continues to be a highly creative artist who has only shared a small fraction of his ideas with the world.
“There are no limits to the sound of electronic music,” Erik stresses when describing Satellites. “The sound will be crafted, manipulated, and pushed to the edge of imagination. The future will look something like a collage of sound visual experiments, neo-space race aesthetic, & future beats all dreamed up in separate unpredictable artistic pieces. The new videos will push the relationship between sound and sight, and what it means to interlace the two together. I’m also coming up with new theories related to visual performance, and how music connects with gaming. Overall, my focus is to create a great experience using technological, sound, and design aesthetics.”

MR.CHOP - Illuminate | Album
Studio wizard Chop pulls out all of the analogue stops on the
Motorik highway to Cybotron by way of a Tangerine Dream on his debut
album for Now-Again. Album out NOW; download a free track below!
Mr. Chop’s debut EP for Now-Again in 2009, Lightworlds, drew together anthemic synth-rock, the jagged sound of Italian prog monsters Goblin, and musique concrète, with surprisingly accessible results. Since then, the artist known to friends as Coz Littler has rid himself of the Mister and returns with renewed focus for his debut album Illuminate known simply as Chop.
The path that took him here was winding indeed. Isolating himself in his Cheshire, UK studio in late 2009, Chop decided to try his hand at the nearly fifty year old – and rarely successful – quest to musically merge the organic and the electronic. Three years later, surrounded by a host of musical material and reeling from the passing of his father, his music started falling into itself and Chop found himself in the center of the spiral.
Enter his friend Joe Fearon, A&R for the likes of Liverpool bands The Coral and The Zutons. With Fearon’s help, Chop whittled down hours of recordings to a selection of the most inspired moments. It became clear that while each stood up on its own, they lacked a unifying theme. Chop discovered a solution in the mutated sound of his own voice – at times processed through a WWII-era bomber pilot’s reconditioned microphone, at others deconstructed via an early Texas Instruments computer. And then everything fell into place: Heliocentrics drummer Malcolm Catto’s rhythm tracks were edited off-the-grid until they became more Neu than James Brown, more driving than syncopated; Bill Ryder Jones from The Coral stepped in for the lead guitar parts, which lent a powerful psychedelic 60s rock sound to the proceedings; Chop repurposed a range of obsolete musical gear to renewed ends, in line with his desire to search for a future imbued with the innocence of the past.
The result is Illuminate, an album equally inspired by the retro-futurism of the still-sputtering 19th century power station in Northern Wales, across the estuary from Chop’s studio, the events of his life, and Chop’s collection of hip-hop, disco, new wave and minimal synth records. A record of extreme personal significance to Chop, the creation of its music conversely helped him to silence the chaos of an increasingly neurotic world and soothe the pain of his loss of his father.
Unsurprisingly, Illuminate traverses a number of moods. The jackhammer pounding of ‘Building Blocks’ segues into the moody but serene ‘Picture Box’. The futuristic soundscape ‘Arcane Future’ takes an uplifting melodic turn, revealing Chop’s hopes for a more perfect tomorrow. Tape loops and effects, field recordings and drum programming all play a role in Illuminate, and as the majority of the tracks were assembled far away from a detailed Pro-Tools grid, in what Chop calls a “mutant modern way of editing things,” This approach gives the songs a life of their own – equally electronic and human. Though it’s the most intellectual approach Chop has taken with his music to date, it retains a spontaneous feel throughout, and despite its technical accomplishments, Illuminate is Chop’s most intimate and personal album yet.
